Description
Wikileaks and hacking crews are considered by some as anarchist special forces striking blows against the forces of domination. Bitcoin is regarded as a practical approach to break the power of capital. Free software is thought of as a model for future production beyond capitalism. We disagree.
‘On Wikileaks, Bitcoin, Copyleft -Three Critiques of Hacktivism’ is collection of 3 pieces (two previously published elsewhere) from The Wine and Cheese Appreciation Society of Greater London.
The first article critiques Wikileaks’ appreciation of the very bourgeois-democratic state by which it is persecuted. The second article engages with Bitcoin, reflecting on the political economy of the digital currency, whilst critiquing the Libertarian ideology that drives it. The final essay – not previously published – deals with free software and other digital commons, exploring how ‘copyleft’ software licences can still be understood as expressions of appreciation for the social conditions under which we are forced to live.
